I decided to give chicory a try earlier in the year. The crop has been incredibly successful, and the slugs will not touch it.
In some respects it’s the crop that did the best outside. However, I hadn’t done my research correctly, and when it came to a taste test, I can honestly say I have never tasted anything so bitter.
The thing with chicory, it needs to blanch when growing, by placing a bucket or dark material over it (exactly as you do with rhubarb when forcing it). I never succeeded in this, whenever I tried it, the plant would rot and be eaten by slugs. I don’t even like chicory that much!
